The Best Mystery Movies of All Time. From "The Third Man" to "Knives Out"

Unlike other genres like action and romance that target a certain age-group, mystery movies appeal to a wider section of movie goers. Don't we all love a good mystery story that keeps us hooked till the final reveal? Thankfully there has never been a shortage of mystery movies as Hollywood keeps churning a handful of them each year.

1930s to 1950s was a period that is defined as the golden age of mystery film noir. Movies like "M", "Green for Danger", "Rebecca" and "The Thin Man" are widely acknowledged classics and they continue to entertain the audiences even today. The decades that followed saw the genre being categorized by sub-genres like psychological  thrillers, supernatural thrillers, detective mysteries etc. making it easier for the audience to select movies by their preferred sub-genre.

5. The Third Man: Released in 1949, The Third Man is undoubtedly one of the finest mystery movies in the history of cinema. This British film-noir narrates the story of a man who visits post-war Vienna only to find out that his friend has been mysteriously killed. An investigation unfolds and the fast paced screenplay keeps the audience glued to the screen during the entire length of the movie.

4. Clue: Clue falls into the extremely popular "mystery comedy" sub-genre. Released in 1985, this movie follows the classic theme of a group of strangers trapped in an isolated mansion with a mysterious host. Similar to another movie with the same premise "Murder by Death", Clue remains a unique and wonderful cinematic experience.

3. Scream: The iconic Scream franchise took off with this 1996 trend setting slasher whodunit. Starring Neve Campbell and a host of other actors that were popular at that time, Scream is a perfect murder mystery that will keep you entertained all along. This movie was followed by 6 sequels, all of them entertaining and unpredictable.

2. The Usual Suspects: The movie with one of the greatest twist endings of all time. The movie boasts of a stellar star cast, a fast paced story and of course numerous twists and turns in the plot. Rated as number 2 in our list of greatest mystery movies, The Usual Suspects is a must watch for all mystery fans. The movie is also known for a noteworthy performance by Kevin Spacey.

1. Knives Out: One of the most anticipated movies of recent times, Knives Out reminds you of a cozy Agatha Christie novel. A crime novelist is murdered and his family members are immediately under suspicion. It takes a mysterious private detective to figure out which one of them is the killer. The movie also has a great star cast including Chris Evans, Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana De Armas and Daniel Craig.
